The homework problem is a design problem

· 1 min

Before you write a detection policy, check whether the assignment survives one honest question.

The question is: could a student produce an acceptable answer to this without having done the thinking I care about? If yes, that was true before any of this existed. The technology did not create the hole; it made the hole cheap to walk through.

Which is uncomfortable, because it means a policy will not fix it. A policy governs behaviour around the assignment. The problem is inside the assignment.

The good news is that the repairs are old and well understood: ask for the process alongside the product, make the context local, require a defence. Every one of these predates the current moment by decades.
